• How To Restore Accidentally Deleted Bookmarks On Firefox & Chrome | 01/04/12
  
  

  It happens to all of us: things get deleted by accident, and by the time we’re wise to it, they’re gone. Our browser’s bookmarks are no different. The bookmarks interface in both Firefox and Chrome is a bit confusing at times, and I can think of at least one time when I deleted a whole folder of bookmarks by mistake, thinking I was just removing it from the bookmarks toolbar.

  Fortunately, restoring accidentally deleted bookmarks is rather easy, both in Firefox and Chrome. While in Firefox it has become a built-in feature, in Chrome it still requires some folder digging. In either case, don’t despair. There is a good chance you can get your lost bookmarks back.

  Chrome

  If you've accidentally deleted some Chrome bookmarks, and you haven’t restarted Chrome more than once or twice since, you’re probably in luck. Chrome automatically backs up your bookmarks every once in a while, and your missing bookmarks may be waiting for you in that backup. So how do you restore those bookmarks from backup?

  In Explorer, browse to: C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default. Note that AppData is a hidden folder, and you might not see it if Explorer is not set to show hidden folders. In any case, you can simply copy the path and paste it into Explorer. Just make sure to replace “USERNAME” by your own user name.

  In this folder, you’ll find two important files: Bookmarks and Bookmarks.bak. Bookmarks includes your current bookmarks, and Bookmarks.bak is the backup you’re aiming at. You can check the date next to Bookmarks.bak to make sure the backup was done before you deleted the bookmarks. And now, to work: change the name of Bookmarks to Bookmarks.old.

  

  After you’ve done that, erase the “.bak” from Bookmarks.bak, so it simply becomes Bookmarks. The backup is now your main bookmarks file.

  

  When you change the names, Windows will warn you than you might ruin the file forever and ask if you’re really sure you want to take this step. You can go with “Yes” this time, you’re safe.

  

  Now restart Chrome, and your good old bookmarks will be back where they should be!

  

  
  

  Obviously, if you’ve added or changed bookmarks after the accidental deletion, you will lose these changes by restoring the backup. So make sure you don’t lose newer bookmarks by restoring older ones.

  Firefox

  Firefox provides an easier way to restore lost bookmarks. This can be done even if you’ve restarted Firefox several times, and even if it’s been several days since the “accident”.

  

  Firefox automatically backups your bookmarks, much like Chrome does, but unlike Chrome, it saves the last 10 backups for you, instead of just one. In addition, you don’t have to go digging around in folders and changing names – Firefox has built this into its interface.

  In the Firefox menu choose Bookmarks and then Show All Bookmarks. Alternatively, you can simply hit Ctrl+Shift+B. In the bookmarks library window, choose “Import and Backup”, and then “Restore”.

  

  Here you will get to choose which backup you want restore. The best bet would be to choose the latest one before you deleted your bookmarks. If you’re restoring just after deleting them, choose the most recent one. If you’ve done this several days ago, go for an older backup.

  Firefox will now warn you that restoring bookmarks will replace all your current bookmarks. Take this into account if you’ve done any changes lately besides deleting bookmarks by accident. Ideally, the only change between now and the backup should be the deleted bookmarks.

  

  After you click OK, the change is immediate. You don’t even have to restart Firefox. Your lost bookmarks will simply reappear out of the abyss.

  

  Note

  It’s prudent, of course, to always back up everything you have on your computer, including bookmarks. It’s nice to know there’s a way to restore accidentally deleted bookmarks, but don’t rely on it too heavily, especially when using Chrome.

  The main feature that this update brings is faster performance. This version of Ad-Aware uses far less system resources than previous versions. Version 10 of Ad-Aware also includes a completely redesigned user interface that is easier to navigate. It also includes enhanced real-time monitoring and download protection, which stops malware before it is opened and prevents it from getting the chance to do any damage.

  

  Ad-Aware has also added game mode, which monitors in the background without interrupting while users play a game or watch a video full-screen. It also uses less system resources than older versions, so gaming performance will not be affected by having the protection running in the background.

  The Ad-Aware interface is super-smooth and everything seems to work better than the previous versions. It is definitely worth checking out if you are looking for a new method of protecting your computer.

  Why does Gmail marks things as spam? Now you can find out. Google has added a new feature to Gmail – spam explanations. From now on, every time you venture into your Gmail spam folder and click on an e-mail, Gmail will tell you exactly why it filed this message under Spam.

  One of Gmail’s best features is its spam filter. As good as it is, though, it’s not always right. Even when it is, it’s nice to know more about how the filter works and why it sees certain things and not others as spam. If you head over to your spam folder right now, and click on an e-mail, you’ll see a message on the top explaining why this e-mail was marked as spam, complete with a “Learn more” link.

  

  The reasons vary from e-mail to e-mail: when Gmail thinks an e-mail is really dangerous, it highlights the message in red and warns you that similar messages were used to steal information. Alternatively, it might inform you that it couldn’t verify the message was really sent from that domain, that in contains content that’s typical to spam messages, or that you’ve simply asked for this sender to be marked as spam.

  This is a useful feature, especially for when Gmail’s spam filter fails, but also for your general knowledge. As usual, the new feature does not yet appear in Google Apps accounts, only in regular Gmail accounts.

  Google has unveiled a brand new service by the name of Google Play. Google Play is a combined name for what we’ve so far known as the Android Market, Google Music and Google eBookstore. Under the same roof, Google will now offer apps, music, books and movies, all available in the cloud.

  Under the new name, Google Play offers a seamless way to sync media between different devices. Every app, book or song you download on one device will be immediately available on all your other devices. All you have to do is log into your Google account. Users are able to pin content for offline playing, but in general, everything on Google Play is stored and played from the cloud, so there’s no real need to actually sync anything, and the quality is consistent.

  

  While the Google Play brand is now available worldwide, the actual content is not. Music is only available in the US, movies and books are available in the US, Canada, UK and Australia, and in Japan you can also get movies, but not books. Other than these countries, all other countries are getting only apps, so for those users this is effectively a rebranding of the Android Market. The new cloud syncing feature will still be available in these countries, of course.

  To celebrate the launch, Google are offering some apps, books, albums and video rentals for special prices. If you hurry up, you might still be able to catch some!

  The service is something like Foursquare combined with Facebook or some other social networking website. You can either drop a pin on any point on the map or enter the location details (City, State, etc.) to find the address.  Once the pin has been placed, you will be required to fill in information for the event that occurred, and it helps people discover you – and for you to discover other people.

• Manage Your Twitter & Identi.ca Accounts With Choqok [Linux] | 21/08/11
  For people who are really tweet-o-holics, constant access to Twitter (or Identi.ca, an open source clone of Twitter) is as much a necessity as food and water. At varying levels, this may also be true for those who are fans of Twitter but not necessarily tweet-o-holics.
  One possible choice is to have Twitter up and running in the browser most of the time. While this is a feasible solution, you’ll start missing out when the browser is minimized. Also, a browser isn’t exactly lightweight on system resources. Therefore, your best bet would be to use a well-built Twitter desktop client.
  
  

  

  About Choqok

  Choqok is a slim Twitter and Identi.ca client made to integrate well with the KDE desktop environment. As far as social media clients go, Gwibber may be a more well known piece of software, but it’s best suited to run under a GNOME desktop. You’re always welcome to try Gwibber with KDE, but I’ve always preferred software native to the desktop environment you’re using. With Choqok, you can quickly and easily reach your Twitter stream at any time and get notifications that appear right on your desktop.

  Installation & Getting Started

  

  To get Choqok installed, all you need to do is search for its package with the same name in your package manager and install it along with any dependencies. Once installation is complete, you can launch Choqok from the Internet category in your menu.
  
  Choqok will appear with a splash screen and ask you to add an account. Go ahead and click yes, then move around the options window to the Accounts section. On the left side, there should be an add button, where you can add an account to the appropriate service. Remember that Identi.ca falls under “StatusNet“. Follow it’s instructions until it says you are authenticated.

  
  

  Layout

  

  The main window of the program is kept simple and organized. At the top you have your menus (as always), along with a custom “More” menu which lets you choose from a few more options that work with Twitter, and a “Mark all as read” button. The empty box between that and your timelines is for your status updates. Anything you send here (by using the Enter key on your keyboard as there is no send button) will be sent to whatever account you have currently selected.

  To send something to multiple accounts at once you can choose Quick Post from the Filemenu and choose which account (or all) you want to send a notice/tweet to.

  Timelines

  The timelines themselves are nicely organized into little tabs. You have a tab for each category Twitter offers on its site as well - Home, Replies, and Inbox (for direct messages). You can click on them and manipulate them as you wish.

  Options

  

  Choqok also has a decent amount of behavioral options, which may be important to some as it includes the ability to change the URL shortening service that it uses.

  Conclusion

  Choqok is a great little program that easily lets you stay in the loop when it comes to Twitter. Its ease of use and overall speed can be well-appreciated by those who use it. Choqok works well with multiple accounts, so managing multiple streams should be no problem at all. Try it out. I promise it’ll be better than your browser.
